Magnifying glasses in use: how to find the right magnification

"What does “3x magnification” actually mean? Quite simply: the object appears three times larger through the lens than it would to the naked eye. However, as the magnification increases, the optical properties and handling of the magnifying glass also change.

Effects of higher magnification

The higher the magnification of a magnifying glass, the more the conditions for its use change:
  • Smaller field of view: The area you can see with the same lens size becomes smaller
  • Shorter working distance: You have to move the magnifier closer to the object to keep the image in focus
  • More blurring: Even small movements make the image noticeably more blurred
Magnifiers with lower magnification also often have larger lenses. This is due to the flatter design, which allows large lenses to be manufactured without compromising image quality.
Finding the right distance
For an image to appear truly sharp through the magnifying glass, the correct distance from the object is required. Too close? Blurry. Too far away? Also blurry. The correct distance is no coincidence, but rather the point at which everything aligns – eye, lens and object.
This is precisely where a magnifying glass comes into its own: details become clear, edges sharp and structures visible. This point depends on the so-called focal length – it determines where the focus lies. The basic rule is: the higher the magnification (shorter focal length), the closer you need to hold the magnifying glass to the object.
Recommendations for everyday use

Choose only as much magnification as is really necessary for your specific task.

  • Everyday use & small print: If you want to examine details or read text more clearly, a magnification of around 2x to 2.2x is often sufficient. This gives you a wider field of view, allowing you to see more at a glance.
  • Precision & detailed work: If you wish to examine very fine structures or check precise work, a magnification of around 3.5x or 4.5x is advisable.

LED lighting: Good lighting makes all the difference

Good lighting is often crucial when examining fine details. When an object is evenly lit, small structures appear clearer and details stand out much more easily. This means that in many situations, you don’t necessarily need a particularly high magnification – good lighting alone makes a big difference. That’s why many of our magnifiers feature built-in LED lighting, which provides a bright, pleasant light. This allows you to focus entirely on what you want to see – whether you’re doing crafts, carrying out repairs or simply taking a curious look at the little things in everyday life.

Magnifying glass care: gentle cleaning for a clear view and a long service life

With the right care, your magnifying glass will remain a reliable companion – clear, precise and always ready for use, providing razor-sharp detail. A soft microfibre cloth (included with our LED magnifying glasses) is sufficient for removing dust or fingerprints. If it is particularly dirty, you can dampen the cloth slightly.
 
Avoid kitchen roll or rough fabrics – they can scratch the lens. Abrasive cleaning agents and alcoholic or organic solvents should not be used. It is also important not to clean the magnifying glass under running water or immerse it in water.
